An Evening with the Gild of Butchers

York Food Festival and the historic Gild of Butchers offer a unique evening, highlighting the Gild’s continuing role both in the industry and the York Mystery Plays.

The Festival declares. “Bored with a typical mid-week evening out for food? Looking for a different type of evening? Then look no further than our Evening with the Gild of Butchers on Wednesday 21 st September in the sumptuous surroundings of the Guildhall, which has enjoyed a pivotal role in York’s history for over 500 years.”

This evening will “open your eyes” to the wealth of fabulous food available here in Yorkshire. Members of the York Butchers Gild begin the evening by demonstrating their skills which have been passed on from one generation to the next since the Gild began in the thirteenth century. The audience will be shown how to prepare cuts of local lamb by Dave Clapham, a proud member of the Gild, before hearing all about another traditional role enjoyed by the Gild: the part they play in the famous York Mystery Plays. When the demonstrations draw to a close the audience will be able to sit back, relax & enjoy a short DVD showing the crucifixion scene in the famous York Wagon Plays.

One of the cuts of lamb carefully prepared & cooked to produce a mouth-watering lamb tagine. To accompany the lamb you’ll have the pleasure of local vegetables – all sourced from the Yorkshire Producers stands in the nearby Festival Market. And to follow, there’ll be a little sweet treat – again from produce bought in the Festival Market.

Visitors arriving earlier can spend the afternoon meandering around the Festival Market and whet the appetite by browsing through the Yorkshire Producers’ stands
